Judy Detrick, Instructor Using solid graphic design principals and two colors, students learn several ways to combine a letter and a simple rectangle into a dynamic, eye-catching design. Color and texture techniques for a fresh approach to coloring both elements are also discussed.

Akim Variations & Long Compositions

Julie Wildman, Instructor Created by Hans-Joachim Burgert, this 1-Day (4+ hour) workshop focuses on rhythmic patterns and compositions said to replicate the rhythm of the human heart and designed for intermediate to advanced skill levels.

Carol DuBosch, Instructor This 1-day/5-hour class will focus on learning the Ben Shahn letters with color-blending exploration and several creative layout exercises.

Breaking the Rules

Mike Gold, Instructor This session is good prep for anybody taking non-traditional, design-oriented lettering classes. The instruction will be supported with handouts and demonstrations.

Calligraphy on the Go! Writing on Anything & Everything

Linda Schneider, Instructor Professional Calligrapher Linda Schneider demonstrates using the pointed brush marker for designs, flourishing with lettering to write thank you notes and names for immediate gifts. Some calligraphy experience is helpful, but not mandatory.  Appropriate for beginners to advanced skill levels.

Chaos & Harmony; Introduction to Ruling Pen

Viktor Kams, Instructor The Ruling Pen is a versatile tool that can achieve a wide range of strokes, splatters and rough edges in your calligraphic compositions. This 4-hr workshop includes an overview of Ruling and Folded pens, exercises to understand manipulation of this unique tool, based on the Italic hand, expressive strokes using aligned vs. bounced proportion principles, along with ink and paper choices.

Creative Colour for All Occasions

Jan Pickett, Instructor This 1-Day, (4+ hour) workshop, includes the exploration of colour in the pen, brush and background, using watercolour, pastels and coloured pencils.

Drawing the Fibonacci Sequence

Gemma Black, Instructor Students study the Fibonacci sequence to understand why it is so important to creative people and creative minds. Students draw, paint and letter using the f.Spiral as the basis, working both freehand (trust me) as well as geometrically draw the sequence. A little Math is required, but you don’t have to be good at it!

Embossing with Extra Pizazz!

Jan Pickett, Instructor Embossing is the art of shaping letters and patterns so they are raised above the surface of the paper, casting subtle shadows and giving an appearance of quality wherever used. After learning to prepare and cut re-usable templates, the embossing process begins with its many and varied applications.

Expressive Pointed Italic

Marta Mapelli, Instructor This is a 1-Day (4+ hour) Workshop. Students start with pencil and monoline italic skeleton letters, then go through pointed pen letters, and end with rhythm and form variations.

Foundation Tune Up

Cora Pearl, Instructor This 1-Day (4+ hour) workshop is based on the Foundational style of calligraphy developed by Edward Johnston. Students use this script in a variety of ways to deepen understanding and skill with this hand. Not appropriate for students who have never used a broad edged nib or for students who have very little experience using it.

Gothic Lettering Magic with Procreate

Tamer Ghoneim, Instructor Procreate is packed with features and opens the door to tremendous creative exploration. Students learn everything to get started in Procreate, including brushes, setting up a canvas, working with the drawing tools and settings. Students learn how to make a calligraphy masterpiece regardless of their experience using this amazing software.

Graffiti Writing - The New York Lesson

Ali Riccardo, Instructor This 1-Day Workshop (4+ hours) begins with a foundation and historical documents. Students discover how the most complex and enduring American art movement based on letters developed. Thanks to a calligraphic approach, see how, from a simple “TAG”, we arrive at the “PIECE”. A journey through the letters, the loops, the rules to be broken.

In the Glow of Gouache

Suzanne Moore, Instructor Egg glair will add versatility to the beauty and richness of gouache on paper. Glair adds additional adhesion to gouache, and allows layering of colors as you letter or paint, as well as wear-resistance for book artists. Success is found from the tiniest nib to the gutsiest brush.

Letters Unlimited

Jan Pickett, Instructor In this 1-day (4+ hour) workshop students create decorative drawn and edged pen letters by adding shape, form, a third dimension, shadow and ‘invisible’ lettering. Mastering Italic Tune Up

Carrie Imai, Instructor This 1-Day (4+ hour) workshop is an in-depth study of the Formal Italic Alphabet through demonstration and revealing exercises. Students study each of the components and use this information to determine how your personal Italic can be improved. Students learn how to fix old pens, make gouache and watercolor flow to write beautifully.

Monoline Lettering Techniques with Cora Pearl, Instructor

Monoline lettering is a great way to learn new styles of lettering and to delve in to the principles of lettering, layout, and design, without the added challenge of working with complicated tools. In this workshop we will explore different ways of working with monoline lettering that can be applied to other calligraphic styles and tools. This workshop is appropriate for all levels.

Robbie Saslow, Instructor This 1-Day (4+ hour) Workshop explores the beauty of the Hebrew Alef-bet!, the calligraphic aspects and how Hebrew is both similar to and different from English. Students learn the 27 beautiful and simply-crafted letterforms along with variations to create a style that is uniquely their own. No knowledge of Hebrew is necessary.

Sketching Flowers with Watercolors & Ink

The Art of Miniature Painting & Lettering

The Glittering Vine

Heather Held, Instructor This is a 1-Day (4+ hour) Workshop, where the process of gilding is demystified as we design Glittering Vines. The border designs are rooted in Medieval Illuminated manuscripts but take on a whimsical flair as we draw from a variety of influences. The vines can transform into ribbons or acanthus leaves as the underlying structures are explored.

Versals

Mark Van Stone, Instructor This is a 1-Day (4+hour) Workshop. I have deciphered and used the techniques of Medieval Artists ingenious decorations in my calligraphy work for decades. These are the easiest and most improvisational Versal techniques, which is why they are so abundant in Medieval manuscripts. Students learn the simple rules and methods.

Victorian Frames & Labels

Heather Held, Instructor The Victorian era provided a wealth of decorative ornamental designs that can be translated with the pointed pen. Using Victorian Scraps as our inspiration, we will use a pointed pen etching technique to create opulent floral designs.
