The Iconographic Meaning of the Heart and Arrow

This combination is highly symbolic in late medieval culture, especially in devotional and courtly contexts.

A. Devotional / Religious Meaning

In many 14th–15th c. manuscripts, a pierced heart can symbolize:

  • Christ’s love and sacrifice

  • Spiritual devotion

  • The wounded soul devoted to God

  • Divine charity (caritas)

This is especially common in:

  • Prayer books

  • Moral treatises

  • Devotional compilations

B. Courtly / Allegorical Meaning

In secular or semi-secular manuscripts, it often represents:

  • Love wounded by desire

  • Courtly love

  • Fidelity

  • Emotional suffering
