KNOT #6 - Codex 33, f. 121r

This is the sixth knot of twelve in this Knot Forgotten series.
2 Patterns this month. One with the "Q" horse head and one without.

Codex 33, f. 121r (edited)

The Codex 33, f. 121r knot comes from:

• Minuscule 33 (Gregory–Aland 33)
• A Greek New Testament manuscript
• Dated to the 9th century (Byzantine period)

Important context:

• Written on parchment
• Produced in a Byzantine scribal environment
• Known historically as “the queen of the cursives” because of its textual importance.

The exact artistic origin (workshop or scriptorium) is unknown, but scholars suggest:

• Possible connections to Egypt or southern Italy, where mixed textual traditions circulated.
• Byzantine, (not Western medieval)
• Belongs to a tradition where geometry and ornament support sacred text
• Not random decoration—this interlaced knot is constructed, intentional, and symbolic of continuity

The manuscript is currently housed at:

• Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), Paris

• Shelfmark: Greek Codex Gr. 14
