Paint-Along Session with Risa Gettler
In this 4-hour session, participants leap into the holidays enjoying the painting process with gouache. Techniques for shading and adding fine detail will be covered with this medieval hart (medieval red deer).
This image is from an exceptional and lavishly decorated manuscript. It was a love gift from Queen Sancha, for her husband Fernando I of Leon in 1055. Our delicately adorned hart is one of the images in the manuscripts that elegantly and delicately reflects her gentle love.

NOTES:
This session was led by Risa, who guided participants through techniques and materials for a festive fawn design. The group discussed various painting techniques and materials, including gouache, watercolor, and gold leaf, while sharing personal experiences and artistic projects. The session concluded with discussions about art projects, book titles, and personal updates, including family experiences and teaching activities.
TIPS:
Remember to secure your good paper to a piece of cardboard a little larger than the paper size you are working on. Mounting the paper protects and safeguards your artwork from creasing.
Gold options:
Risa uses Fine Tea/Coliro Pearlcolors set of 6 metallic colors: Tibet Gold, Inca (or Inka) Gold
Arabic Gold, Gold Pearl, Moon (or Luna) Gold, Sterling Silver.
Laura and Gloria use Holbein Brilliant Gold G644.
Angie uses Lisilinka metallic watercolor.
Brushes
Risa used a #9 round pointed brush for the large areas and a smaller brush #1 for the fine details.
Laura uses a size "0" brush for filling in and details.
Angie uses a size #6 to fill in large areas and #2 round pointed brush for details.
Watercolor or Gouache?
Most Participants enjoyed using gouache for their paintings. Risa's sample painting was done with Burnt Sienna gouache. Risa use Alizarin Crimson gouache for her painting during the Live session.
Gloria tried Burnt Sienna watercolor and was not happy with the results, switching to Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna gouache.
Angie used Calligraphy Ink by Ferris Wheel Press. FWP Calligraphy ink is opaque like gouache and vibrant. Angie also used a semi-transparent watercolor by Charvin from Paris (not available in the US).
Embossing & Tooling
Use a double-ended embossing tool with ball tips.
If you make a mistake tooling/embossing the gold, just paint in the mistakes with the same gold paint. Allow to dry completely and re-tool.
