Each Live session features participant work with critique and discussion.Risa replies to each submission via email as well.

Each week homework must be submitted via Dropbox (in any stage of the process)
by 12:00 noon Pacific Time (US & Canada), the Thursday prior to class.

THE 4 STAGES OF CREATING MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IMAGES
You will submit photographs or scans of each stage of this process.

01 = The original manuscript image
02 = Graph drawing
03 = Line art pattern
04 = Final Painting

CREATING YOUR OWN MANUSCRIPT IMAGE
THE PROCESS IN A NUTSHELL

Each week participants choose one (or more) images to work from.

1. Resize the image to fit within a half page area (about 5.5” x 8.5”) (148.5 mm x 210 mm)

2. Print out the image or view on your computer/tablet for reference.

3. Trace the image on to a piece of graph paper.
Straighten out the areas or elements you want to change.
Take a photo of this stage and label “02”.

4. Place a translucent piece of Marker Layout paper on top of the Graph Drawing.

5. Draw your new pattern on the Marker layout paper with permanent marker (this becomes a reusable pattern).
Take a photo of this stage and label “03”.

6. Scan the pattern into your computer.

7. Using a Laser printer, print out the pattern onto Arches Text Wove or 90# or 140# Watercolor paper.

8. Paint the printed pattern using gouache or watercolor and a pointed brush.
Take a photo of the final painting and label “04”.

Students are welcome to work at any size, however, the image size for submitting homework are restricted to 1800 pixels in either direction.
