This 6-week series will showcase a range of late medieval (primarily Gothic) approaches to mise-en-page (page layout and composition) across different functional contexts: a more text-focused devotional page, a highly ornamental devotional hymn page (shown), and functional liturgical manuscripts.
Participants will learn about
Size and position of the text block
Width of the margins
Large decorated or historiated initials
Rinceaux borders and marginal decoration
Integration of text + image + ornament
Painting techniques (lettering is not addressed in this series)
The first session begins with a paint along. Pre-session work is required and a video is provided for direction. A pattern is provided as participants follow along.
LIVE SESSION FORMAT
Live class sessions begin with a demonstration and discussion on techniques. The Live session provides an opportunity for open critique and review. Students are encouraged to talk through struggles and share successes.
MONDAY EVENING OPEN STUDIO SALON (Optional)
Monday evening Live (not recorded) Open Studio Salon sessions are offered each Monday following the Friday session and available as a relaxed evening session for questions, troubleshooting, working on projects together.

Work in progress is due each week by 7:00am Friday mornings via uploading to Dropbox.
