Roman Holiday Bundle

This is a Roman Holiday Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Series. 10 sessions of study with Viktor Kams (30 hours) Explore the evolution of the “Italic hand” from a formal classic approach. A study of structure, shape and rhythm trains participants to learn, to observe, recognize and appreciate the little details by with different tools and techniques from formal, broad edge, to dynamic and gestural.

Develop a range of possibilities with compound capitals, built up with a narrow edged-nib in the method used historically to write versals. We start with versals based on monoline Roman capital forms and practice the "building up" technique. These letterform explorations include variations in letter size/ weight/proportion/slope/movement with words/phrases and brief texts, colour and nib size variation.

This is a Roman Holiday Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Series. 10 sessions of study with Suzie Beringer (30 hours) Circles…provide a way to step away from the ‘straight base line’ and create something different and fresh! Look at circles differently and learn how to incorporate them into our lettering designs ‘Free Writing’ will be addressed and encouraged. Many samples of ideas for you to enjoy and be inspired by.

Edward Johnston defined 3 qualities of good lettering as Simplicity, Distinctiveness & Proportion. This class shows a simple geometric method which enables the recreation of these archetypal forms with great accuracy. After the Trajan analysis, Tom's ’Dynamic Capitals’ evolved from his own version of freehanded, drawn letters in the 1980’s and has used them in both more formal and freely composed inscriptions.
